Five Italian Visa Paths
Real requirements for each path, grounded in the Italian Immigration Consolidation Act (D.Lgs. 286/1998) and its implementing regulation.
Work Visa
Lavoro Subordinato
- Sponsored by your Italian employer; entries fall within the annual quotas of the decreto flussi.
- Nulla osta issued within 60 days of the request, valid 6 months.
- Consular visa within 30 days; contract of soggiorno signed within 8 days of entry.
- Permit up to 1 year (fixed-term) or 2 years (open-ended); renewals up to 3 years.
- Permit contribution €80–€200.
- No income requirement for you — the employer bears the economic obligations (accommodation, return expenses).
Digital Nomad Visa
Nomade Digitale — Remote Worker
- For highly qualified non-EU remote workers — outside the quota system (Art. 27(1)(q-bis) T.U.).
- University degree or 5 years of professional experience (3 in ICT).
- Minimum income from lawful sources: €24,789/year (three times the health-expense exemption level).
- Health insurance, accommodation and at least 6 months of prior experience.
- Remote workers: binding contract or offer ≥ ISTAT average (~€33,500/year).
- Permit 1 year, renewable; no nulla osta; codice fiscale issued with the permit; partita IVA for self-employed nomads; family reunification allowed.
Study Visa
Visto per Studio
- University, higher and technical-professional (ITS) courses, internships and vocational training.
- Proof of means not below the Ministry of the Interior directive amount (Art. 4(3) T.U.) or a scholarship.
- Health insurance policy and accommodation.
- Permit valid for the course duration, with annual progress checks.
- Work during studies: up to 20 hours/week (1,040 hours/year).
- Renewals up to 3 years beyond the course; conversion to a work permit within the quotas.
Self-Employment / Freelance Visa
Lavoro Autonomo
- Autonomous professional activity not reserved to Italian or EU citizens (Art. 26 T.U.).
- Annual income from lawful sources above the health-expense exemption level, plus suitable accommodation.
- Regulated activities: attestation from the Chamber of Commerce or professional order on minimum resources.
- Provisional nulla osta from the Questura within 20 days.
- Visa within 120 days, to be used within 180 days.
- Permit up to 2 years, renewals up to 3 years; subject to the decreto flussi quotas.
Investor Visa
Visto per Investitori
- Outside the quota system — one single investment type (Art. 26-bis T.U.).
- €2,000,000 Italian government bonds · €500,000 shares of an Italian capital company · €250,000 innovative start-up · €1,000,000 philanthropic donation.
- Investment within 3 months of entry, maintained for the permit's duration.
- Free online application (investorvisa.mise.gov.it); Committee evaluation within 30 days.
- Nulla osta valid 6 months; 2-year visa; biennial permit renewable in 3-year periods with no limit.
- Permit costs: €30.46 + €50.00 + €16.00 revenue stamp.

Which Italian visa fits my situation?
It depends on your activity and goals. Work visas require a job offer and are subject to the annual quotas of the decreto flussi. The digital nomad visa is outside the quota system and requires remote highly qualified work with a minimum income of € 24,789 per year. Study visas require enrollment in a course plus proof of funds. Self-employment requires income above the health-expense exemption threshold, and the investor visa requires an investment between € 250,000 and € 2,000,000 depending on the type. Is the digital nomad visa subject to the quota system?
No. Remote workers and digital nomads enter outside the quota system under Article 27(1)(q-bis) of the Immigration Consolidation Act. You must prove highly qualified remote work (university degree or 5 years of experience — 3 in ICT), a minimum income of € 24,789 per year, health insurance, accommodation and at least 6 months of prior experience. The permit is issued for one year and renewable.
Can I work while I study in Italy with a study permit?
Yes. Holders of a study or training permit may work up to 20 hours per week (1,040 hours per year). The study permit lasts as long as the course and is renewed subject to annual progress checks; renewals may not exceed 3 years beyond the course. Converting to a work permit is possible within the annual quotas.
